Egypt categorically denies Israeli claims that it agreed to establish an alternative crossing to Rafah crossing, a senior informed source told Al-Qahera News on Sunday, adding that the current crossing arrangement should be adhered to.

Rafah crossing

On Sunday, Israeli Channel 12 reported that the Israeli army intends to rebuild an alternative border crossing between Gaza and Egypt at a new location near the Karm Abu Salem crossing at the intersection of the Israeli-Egyptian border.

The channel also claimed that Israel, Egypt, the Palestinians, and the US would jointly manage the new crossing.

The informed source added that Egypt rejects the deployment of any Egyptian forces inside the Gaza Strip, affirming that the arrangement of affairs within the strip following the ongoing military operation is a Palestinian matter.

Egypt has previously informed all parties that the recovery of detainees and the cessation of the ongoing military operation in the Gaza Strip must be achieved through a permanent ceasefire agreement and the exchange of detainees and prisoners.

On 7 May, Israel launched its assault on Rafah, taking over the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt for the first time since Israel pulled out its soldiers and settlers from the strip in 2005.

Since then, Egypt has rejected multiple Israeli suggestions to co-manage the crossing, insisting that only the Egyptians and Palestinians have the right to manage it and urging Israel to withdraw its forces.

Meanwhile, Egypt coordinated with the United Nations to facilitate the entry of over 2,000 trucks into the Gaza Strip over the past three weeks through the Karm Abu Salem crossing.
