Ambassador Dumas' remarks came during the event held by the Canadian embassy in Cairo this week to celebrate Canada’s National Day, which comes annually on 1 July.

The history of relations between Egypt and Canada dates back to establishing their first diplomatic representation in 1954.

After that, Canada gained a prominent position in Egypt for the first time with its successful intervention in the Suez crisis in 1956 due to the pivotal role played by the then-Canadian Foreign Minister Lester Pearson in ending the Suez crisis and deploying the United Nations Emergency Force in Sinai, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1957.

During the celebration, the Canadian ambassador stressed that "the two countries are currently working to achieve peace in the region, amid a world characterized by geopolitical turmoil and instability," catastrophic humanitarian events in Gaza, escalation of the conflict in Sudan on the southern border of Egypt, and the war in Ukraine.

Dumas called for ending all the wars and reviving humanity, with the desire to do good, help each other, and make this planet a place where nations can live in peace.

He stressed that building strong relationships among nations is the key to achieving the desired peace.

The then-Minister of International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat, who took the oath on Wednesday as the Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, attended the event.

Moreover, the then-Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine El-Qabbaj, who was replaced on Wednesday by Minister Maya Morsy, along with a group of Egyptian and foreign diplomats, politicians, and journalists attended the celebration.

Al-Mashat expressed her happiness at celebrating the 70th anniversary of relations between Egypt and Canada, which she described as distinguished in many fields, including climate action, international cooperation, and supporting women.

"We celebrate a special day for relations between the two countries, just as we celebrate Canada's National Day today, as the areas of cooperation between the two countries are developing greatly," said El-Qabbaj.
