“A UNRWA relief convoy headed to Gaza was fired upon by Israeli forces, marking another chapter in the daily violations of international humanitarian law by Israel,” said Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesperson of the foreign affairs ministry, in a short statement posted on the social media network X.
“The targeting and obstruction of humanitarian aid further exacerbates the humanitarian disaster faced by the Palestinian people,” he added.
Earlier Monday, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA Philippe Lazzarini said that there was a heavy shooting from the Israeli forces at a UN convoy heading to Gaza on Sunday.
Lazzarini explained that, although no casualties were recorded, the UNRWA teams wearing UN vests and travelling in clearly marked UN armoured cars had to take cover.
One vehicle received at least five bullets while waiting just ahead of the Israeli forces’ checkpoint south of Wadi Gaza, he added underscoring the car’s severe damage and leaving the convoy as a result.
According to the commissioner-general, the UNRWA teams reached Gaza despite the attack.
Lazzarini revealed that, like all other similar UN movements, the convoy's movement was approved by the Israeli authorities.
