Egypt's Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty (R) and his French counterpart, Stéphane Séjourné (L)
During the call, they discussed the situation in the region and developments in the Gaza war.
FM Abdelatty affirmed that international recognition will send a clear message to the international community and Israeli circles about the importance of understanding peace determinants and progressing towards a two-state solution.
Moreover, he underscored the gravity of Israeli decisions that hinder efforts to reach a two-state solution, including considering the UNRWA a terrorist organization.
Abdelatty also warned of the seriousness of a Knesset's recent decision that rejects establishing a Palestinian state, describing such a measure as a clear disregard for international legitimacy resolutions and peace process references.
In response, Séjourné underlined France’s willingness to undertake a pioneering role in advancing efforts to resolve the current crisis during the coming period.
France has been advocating for the two-state solution, and President Emmanuel Macron has recently expressed his readiness to recognize the State of Palestine but is delaying the decision.
“I am completely ready to recognize a Palestinian state, but … I believe that this recognition must come at a useful time,” Macron said at the end of his visit to Germany in late May.
After winning in the French parliamentary elections earlier in July, the New Popular Front (NFP) has vowed to recognize the State of Palestine as soon as possible.
The Israeli escalation in Gaza has pushed several countries, including EU members, to recognize the State of Palestine in a bid to establish peace.
EU members like Spain, Ireland, and Slovenia as well as non-EU Norway have recently recognized the Palestinian state.
In addition, several European states, including Malta, Belgium, and Luxembourg, have expressed the possibility of following suit.
To date, the latest recognitions raise the total number of countries recognizing Palestine to 147, including 10 EU members.
Non-EU Serbia, Albania, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Iceland, Azerbaijan, and Vatican City have also taken the step.
