Egypt's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva Mohamed Elghitany stressed on Friday non-nuclear states' inalienable right to fully and unconditionally benefit from nuclear energy for peaceful uses.

He emphasised that this right should be upheld without any hindrance in full accordance with Article 4 of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Elghitany's remarks came during the Egyptian delegation's participation in the work of the second session of the Preparatory Committee for the Review Conference of the NPT.

In addition, he stressed that any measures taken by certain states to impose an unacceptable conditionality on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy violates the NPT's text, spirit, and objectives.

Elghitany also emphasised that non-nuclear weapon member states in the treaty shouldn't face any restrictions to fully benefit from nuclear energy for peaceful uses following the treaty.

According to the UN website, the NPT is a landmark international treaty whose objective is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and promote cooperation in using nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

In February, Egypt's former Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry urged imposing legally binding security guarantees on nuclear states to prevent them from threatening non-nuclear states, especially amid recent global tensions.

Shoukry's remarks came during Egypt's participation at the high-level segment (HLS) of the 55th UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) session and the HLS of the Conference on Disarmament.
