Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty with his Somali counterpart Ahmed Moalem Faki
FM Abdelatty made his remarks during a meeting on Thursday with his Somali counterpart Ahmed Moalem Faki in Cairo.
The meeting followed the signing of a military cooperation protocol between Egypt and Somalia, attended by both nations' presidents.
Both ministers explored means to enhance Egyptian-Somali relations, including bilateral cooperation programs.
Abdelatty expressed his eagerness to maintain ongoing meetings and deepen consultations between the two sides.
He praised the Egyptian and Somali presidents' meeting on Wednesday in Cairo as “a constructive dialogue,” according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.
He also stressed Egypt's keenness to participate in the peacekeeping mission in Somalia, in line with the wishes of the Somali people, the statement added.
Meanwhile, a new Egyptian embassy headquarters was opened in Mogadishu on Tuesday. The step was described by Abdelatty as “an important step towards strengthening the historical ties between the two countries.”
Abdelatty and Faki agreed on the importance of increasing trade and taking full advantage of the launch of EgyptAir flights between Cairo and the Somali capital in July.
The Somali minister expressed his pleasure at his current visit to Egypt and his country’s gratitude for Egypt’s support.
Faki also mentioned Somalia's desire to strengthen educational cooperation with Egypt, including increasing the scholarships provided by Al-Azhar Al-Sharif to Somali students.
In addition, he suggested considering an increase in the number of EgyptAir flights to Mogadishu to further improve connections and communication between their people.
