Egypt needs ‘cooperation mechanism‘ with partners to support it in hosting 9 mln migrants, refugees: PM
In an official statement, the UN refugee agency reported that the number of registered Sudanese refugees has grown almost sevenfold since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023, with expectations to keep rising.
"With needs growing exponentially, resources are running thin for the Government of Egypt, UN agencies, and other strategic partners to provide refugee and host community children with safe, protective quality learning spaces," the statement read.
According to the UN refugee agency, the 2024 Sudan Regional Refugee Response plan calls for $109 million to respond to refugee education needs across the region.
"To date, only 20 percent of this amount has been mobilized, including $4.3 million, or 40 percent, of the requirement for Egypt," the statement added.
The statement further underscored Egypt's efforts to support Sudanese refugees, pointing out the state’s notable steps to provide refugees with access to education services, with 9,000 children arriving every month.
During a recent high-level UN mission to Egypt, Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UNHCR emphasized the funding shortfall and urged increased international support for children forcibly displaced by the armed conflict, both inside Sudan and in neighbouring countries.
Furthermore, the ECW delegation met with key strategic partners, including donors, UN agencies, local and international NGOs, and Sudanese refugees to review the scope of needs and the ongoing education response by aid partners, the statement added.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The conflict has claimed tens of thousands of civilian lives and displaced about 10 million people, forcing many to abandon their livelihoods.
In addition, over two million Sudanese have fled to neighbouring countries.
Since then, Egypt has received over 500,000 Sudanese refugees fleeing the war, in addition to the five million Sudanese already residing in Egypt, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Cairo also hosted several summits to address the Sudanese crisis.
A total of nine million migrants and refugees exist in Egypt, according to previous estimations of Egyptian officials and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
As of October 2023, the Sudanese nationality has topped the refugees list, followed by Syrians, Yemenis, and Libyans, along with refugees from 133 countries.
According to the IOM, these four nationalities constitute 80 percent of international migrants who currently live in Egypt.
