Zionist entity systematically targets Palestinian academics, educational institutions in Gaza: Al-Azhar Observer

Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (aka Al-Azhar Observer) stated Monday that the Israeli occupation has systematically and deliberately targeted educational institutions in Gaza over recent months, resulting in the complete or partial destruction of all 19 universities in the besieged strip.

In April 2024, Palestinian children were seen at a destroyed school in Khan Younis, located in the southern Gaza Strip.

The observatory underscored that the Zionist occupation's actions are intended to "illiterate the Palestinian people," working on “dismantling every symbol of Palestinian society to leave Gazans without future references.”

It highlighted that this strategy aims to create conditions that could "encourage voluntary displacement from the occupied territories if the Israeli occupation's ongoing forced displacement agenda, pursued since last October, does not succeed."

Since 7 October, Israel has killed and injured over 130,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are children and women, significantly damaged Gaza's infrastructure, and displaced most of the population.

Experts report that approximately 80 percent of schools and universities in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed, as detailed in the statement of the observatory.

Additionally, the main campus of Al-Azhar University and its branch in Al-Mughraqa southwest Gaza were both demolished due to persistent shelling in the early months of the Israeli aggression.

Furthermore, the occupation has assassinated 105 senior Palestinian academics and scientists, including three university presidents and one head of the UNESCO Chair for Astrophysics and Space Sciences in Palestine.

This has left around 90,000 students who were enrolled in higher education institutions in Gaza before the aggression unable to continue their studies, added the statement.

Al-Azhar stressed that the Israeli occupation's actions send a message to Palestinians that they face a future devoid of educational standards and teachers. This situation fosters accelerated migration, “which aligns with the occupier's goals.”

Despite the widespread destruction and damage, Palestinians in Gaza are making efforts to maintain teaching and learning, Al-Azhar noted.

Al-Azhar University in Gaza has issued a statement encouraging students to continue their studies through remote learning.

Egypt's Al-Azhar, the world’s most influential Sunni Islamic institution, has strongly condemned Israeli aggression against Gaza and Palestinians since the onset of the war 10 months ago.
