“Egypt held Israel legally responsible for adhering to the status quo at Al-Aqsa Mosque and for respecting Islamic and Christian holy sites,” the statement read, calling on Israel to comply with its obligations as an occupying power and to cease provocative statements that aim to escalate tensions in the region.
The Egyptian foreign ministry highlighted that such irresponsible statements concerning Islamic and Christian holy sites in the Palestinian territories only complicate the situation in the region.
“These statements obstruct efforts to reach a truce and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and pose a serious threat to the future of the final settlement of the Palestinian issue, which is based on the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 4 June 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital,” the Egyptian foreign ministry said.
In a late episode of his ferocious statements, Israeli far-right Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir repeated a call for Jews to be allowed to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque in the occupied East Jerusalem.
Ben-Gvir replied "Yes, yes!" when he was asked in an interview with the Israeli army radio if he would build a synagogue at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
