President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi warned against the dangerous repercussions of the current Israeli escalation in the West Bank during a meeting with a delegation representing US Congress delegation led by Senator Joni Ernst in Cairo.

President El-Sisi stressed that to the Congress delegation that the Israeli escalation “significantly heightens the risk of complicating the regional situation,” read a presidential statement released following the meeting.

He urged a unified international effort to end the escalation in the Palestinian territories and implement internationally recognized and legitimate agreements on the two-state solution.

On Wednesday, the Israeli army conducted four deadly raids on the West Bank cities of Jenin, Nablus, Tubas, and Tulkarem.

The assault, which included air strikes, ground forces, and bulldozers, resulted in at least 17 deaths and 30 injuries among Palestinians, according to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA on Thursday.

According to Palestinian medical sources, the aggression on the northern West Bank has raised the death toll in the occupied West Bank since the war began in Gaza to 667.

Moreover, El-Sisi reaffirmed to the Congress delegation Egypt's commitment to continuing its efforts, along with active allies, to end the ongoing Israeli war which has caused a humanitarian tragedy.

Egypt, besides Qatar and the US, has been mediating for months to strike a deal to end the more-than-10-month-old Israeli war on the strip, where Israel has killed and injured over 130,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women.

Recently, Cairo and Doha have hosted new rounds of indirect talks between Hamas and Israel.

Earlier Thursday, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the ceasefire negotiations have progressed.

On the other hand, the US congressmen emphasized that their visit to the region is focused on supporting efforts to reach agreements on captive-detainee exchange, achieving a ceasefire, and de-escalation.

The US officials also expressed their profound appreciation of Egypt's role in maintaining security and supporting peace efforts in the region.

They especially praised its significant contributions to joint de-escalation efforts and leadership role in providing, coordinating, and delivering humanitarian aid since the beginning of the war.

Sudan crisis

During the meeting, El-Sisi also underscored to the delegation Egypt's ongoing and intensive efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Sudan, restore security and stability, safeguard the Sudanese people's capabilities, and support all pathways toward a political resolution of the crisis.

Since the war began in Sudan in April 2023, Egypt has extended significant humanitarian support, welcoming over 500,000 refugees alongside the five million Sudanese already residing in the country, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In addition, Cairo has hosted several summits to address the Sudanese crisis.

Regional stability

The meeting on Thursday also covered various crises that are impacting countries across the region.

Additionally, El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast commitment to supporting national state entities, upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity, and ensuring national institutions' cohesion to help them fulfil their roles and prevent the spread of terrorism.

Furthermore, members of the US congressional delegation emphasized their commitment to ongoing consultations and collaboration between Egypt and the US to achieve peace, stability, and development in the Middle East.

They also highlighted the importance that various US institutions and sectors place on the bilateral relationship and strategic partnership with Egypt, recognizing it as a cornerstone for regional stability.
