Gaza post-war arrangements must uphold two-state solution: FM Abdelatty

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty has stressed that any proposed arrangements for the post-war period in Gaza must be based on the implementation of the two-state solution and the establishment of a Palestinian state with interconnected and contiguous territories on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Egypt’s top diplomat was speaking during a meeting of the Arab-Islamic Ministerial Committee concerned with the situation in the Gaza Strip, on the sidelines of his participation in the high-level meetings of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Abdelatty discussed with the members of the committee ways to revive the peace process, underscoring that Cairo will press ahead with efforts to mediate a ceasefire deal in Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid to the strip.

He reiterated Egypt's rejection of any scenarios aimed at displacing the Palestinian people from their lands, according to a statement by the foreign ministry.

The Egyptian minister stressed that the current crisis in the Palestinian territory is the result of years-long Israeli practices aimed at perpetuating an illegal occupation, seizing land from its owners and imposing a new demographic reality.

Abdelatty asserted that the current situation in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem requires addressing the roots of the crisis by implementing the two-state solution path to avoid the possibility of igniting further regional escalation.

He discussed means the committee can send a unified message about the suffering of the Palestinians during the upcoming General Assembly meetings, the statement noted.

In addition, Abdelatty stressed the need for the committee to shed light on the obstacles that prevent reaching a ceasefire deal to stop the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the entry of humanitarian aid.

The committee also discussed ways to provide support for the Palestinian side, whether through economic or financial aid to help the Palestinian Authority address the challenges imposed by the continued occupation, the statement added.

Since 7 October, Israel has killed and injured over 130,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children, damaged much of Gaza’s infrastructure, and displaced the majority of its population.

Egypt has consistently called for an end to the Gaza war and, in collaboration with the United States and Qatar, has been mediating indirect talks between Israel and Hamas to secure a ceasefire deal.
