Egypt and Lebanon called in a joint statement on Monday for a binding United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution demanding Israel to stop its aggression on the Palestinian and Lebanese territories immediately.

The statement came following a meeting between Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Abdelatty and Bou Habib discussed the serious developments in the Middle East and firmly denounced the Israeli aggression against Lebanese territories, urging respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

They also urged influential nations to act decisively to prevent conflict escalating into a wider regional war.

FM Abdelatty warned that any threat to Lebanon’s security jeopardizes the entire region's stability, the statement said.

Both diplomats called on Israel to comply with international humanitarian law and relevant treaties, specifically the four Geneva Conventions and their protocols, to protect civilians amid ongoing conflicts.

Moreover, they stressed that the only viable solution to the current Middle East crisis is achieving a comprehensive ceasefire, halting the aggression on Gaza and Lebanon, and resolving the outstanding issues between Israel and Lebanon.

This includes implementing Security Council Resolution 1701, which enables displaced people to return to their villages and restart a political process aimed at establishing a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Israeli aggression in Lebanon

Israel escalated its aggression on Lebanon with airstrikes on Beirut on Friday, which killed at least 31 people and wounded thousands of others, detonating thousands of pagers.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk warned on Saturday that these actions could constitute a war crime.

On Thursday, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati also called on the United Nations to oppose Israel’s “technological war” on the country.

The attacks, characterized as terrorist aggression by Turk and the Lebanese foreign minister, have raised fears of a regional catastrophe.
