Abdelatty's remarks came during a joint press conference with his Spanish counterpart José Manuel Albares in Cairo on Wednesday.

FM Abdelatty stressed that Egypt and Spain agree on fully condemning Israel's prolonged systematic aggression against Gaza, which has lasted for over a year.

He also noted that Israel is employing starvation as a tool of collective punishment against Palestinians and urged the international community to take decisive, urgent, and immediate action to halt the Israeli war on Gaza.

Moreover, Abdelatty highlighted the necessity of implementing an immediate ceasefire in the Palestnian territory, stressing that Cairo will make every effort to exert excessive pressure, in cooperation with regional parties, to secure full and unconditional humanitarian aid entry to Gaza.

Egypt’s top diplomat also condemned the displacement of Palestinians from the West Bank, reaffirming Cairo's rejection of Israeli actions to confiscate certain lands and buildings belonging to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Situation in Lebanon

During the press conference, Abdelatty said the discussions with his Spanish counterpart also addressed the situation in Lebanon, emphasizing the urgent need to stop Israel's aggression against the country.

Furthermore, he strongly condemned the displacement of 1.2 million Lebanese from their homes due to Israeli attacks, stressing the importance of enhancing the deployment of the Lebanese army south of the Litani River following UN Resolution 1701.

Resolution 1701, unanimously approved by the UNSC on 11 August 2006, called for a complete Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon following the Israeli war on the country.

It stipulated that the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) would be the only armed forces permitted south of the Litani River, approximately 30 km (about 20 mi) from Lebanon's southern border.

Egypt has consistently reiterated the importance of empowering Lebanese national institutions, particularly the Lebanese army as the entity capable of ensuring the country's stability.

Additionally, Abdelatty emphasized the need for a consensus president solely elected by the Lebanese, without any external interference.

Egypt and Spain also condemned the Israeli targeting of UNIFIL, the UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon.

Abdelatty added that an Egyptian air fleet is actively working with Beirut to deliver relief supplies, including shelter, food, and medicine.

He also noted that an Egyptian aeroplane was en route to Beirut airport to continue Egypt's airlift aid towards the Lebanese.

Earlier in October, the first shipment of Egyptian medical and relief aid arrived in Beirut as part of Cairo's support for the Lebanese people.

In a statement to Al-Qahera News from Beirut, Egyptian Ambassador to Lebanon Alaa Moussa said that the aid plane carried 22 tons of medical and relief supplies.

Regional stability

During the press conference, Abdelatty announced that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected in Cairo on Thursday as part of Egypt's efforts to de-escalate regional tensions.

The Spanish foreign minister Albares noted that Egypt and Spain share a common perspective on peace and de-escalation in the region, highlighting their joint efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and increase aid supplies to the Palestinian strip.

He also emphasized that both countries are committed to achieving a two-state solution and supporting the Palestinian people.

Ties with Spain

During the presser, Abdelatty stated that discussions with his Spanish counterpart also focused on the deep economic, political, and cultural ties between Egypt and Spain and strategies to encourage Spanish companies to increase investments in the Egyptian market.

He expressed his appreciation for the contributions of the Spanish firms operating in Egypt, particularly in transport, railways, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and industrialization.

The trade exchange between Egypt and Spain surged to $3.6 billion in 2021, up from $2.4 billion in 2020, an increase of $1.2 billion or 51.2 percent.

Spanish investments in Egypt also saw significant growth, reaching $51.1 million in the first quarter of FY2021/2022, compared to $24.3 million in the same quarter of FY2020/2021, an increase of $26.8 million or 110.3 percent.

Spain’s top diplomat also affirmed that his visit to Egypt aims to strengthen Egyptian-Spanish relations, emphasizing that Cairo is a crucial partner for Madrid in the Middle East and Africa.
