Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty (L) and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken (R)
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Abdelatty made his remarks during a phone call on Saturday with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The two sides focused on recent regional developments and the ongoing efforts to mitigate escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The call comes hours after Israel conducted air strikes against military bases and missile sites in Iran in response to Tehran's retaliatory attack in October.
The statement added that Abdelattay and Blinken tackled the ongoing efforts to achieve an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation in the Gaza Strip, where Israel since 7 October of last year has killed over 42,847 people and injured over 100,544 others, mainly women and children.
The call also touched upon Egypt's, the US's, and Qatar's mediation efforts to reach a captives and detainees release deal and the outcomes of Blinken’s recent diplomatic efforts in the region.
According to the statement, Abdelatty stressed to Blinken the need to intensify efforts to provide unconditional humanitarian assistance to Gaza, urging Israel to refrain from obstructing relief efforts and condemning Israeli attempts to undermine the UNRWA.
Abdelatty and Blinken also addressed efforts to achieve a swift ceasefire in Lebanon, highlighting the presidential vacancy and the need to elect a president who reflects the consensus of the Lebanese people.
Abdelatty outlined Egypt's efforts to halt Israeli escalations in Lebanon, condemning the ongoing violations of Lebanese sovereignty, which have led to a humanitarian disaster with over 1.2 million displaced persons, according to the statement.
Furthermore, he spotlighted Israeli attacks on UNIFIL forces, which blatantly contravene the United Nations Charter and international law.
The statement noted that Abdelatty also urged an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and the complete implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 to enable Lebanese institutions, particularly the Lebanese army, to fulfil their roles.
Adopted unanimously after the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon, United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 calls for a full Israeli withdrawal from the country, stipulating that the Lebanese army and UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL) would be the only armed forces permitted south of the Litani River, approximately 30 km (about 20 mi) from Lebanon's southern border.
Moreover, the statement pointed out that Abdelatty and Blinken also addressed the dire political and humanitarian situation in Sudan, focusing on efforts to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid and establish a ceasefire.
Abdelatty affirmed to Blinken the importance of maintaining and supporting Sudan’s state institutions and respecting the country’s unity and territorial integrity.
