According to a statement from the Egyptian foreign ministry, in a phone call with Araghchi, Abdelatty warned of the risks of dragging the region into conflict, which would benefit no one and could have serious repercussions for its people.
It was the latest phone call between the two top diplomats in a series as Egypt continues efforts to de-escalate regional volatility amid Israeli wars in Lebanon and Gaza and the possibility of Tehran retaliating against Israel for its 26 October attack against Iran.
On Monday, Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for the Iranian foreign ministry, said the Islamic Republic will use all available resources to respond to the recent Israeli aggression against Iran, asserting that the response would be “firm and decisive.”
Baghaei’s remarks echoed similar comments made by Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who vowed on Saturday “a harsh response” against both the US and Israel for their actions against Tehran.
On 26 October, Israel carried out airstrikes on sites in Iran in response to Tehran's 1 October missile attack on Israeli military sites, itself retaliation for the Israeli assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in late summer.
During the call, Abdelatty reiterated to Araghchi Egypt's condemnation of unilateral and provocative actions that threaten regional security and stability, warning that such measures could lead to dire consequences for the region and its people.
The phone call also discussed developments in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, the statement added.
Regarding Lebanon, Egypt’s top diplomat reaffirmed the need to empower the Lebanese national institutions and elect a president for the country within the framework of Lebanese ownership and without foreign interference.
On the situation in Gaza, Abdelatty reviewed the efforts made by Egypt in coordination with Qatar and the US to reach a ceasefire agreement in the strip, ensure full and unconditional access to humanitarian and medical aid to Gazans, and release captives and detainees.
He stressed to Araghchi that Egypt is urging the international community to unite its efforts to stop the bloodshed in Gaza and address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the strip, the statement added.
On Sunday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian hinted that Iran would reconsider its response to Israel if the Israeli war on Gaza and Lebanon ends.
