Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty has stressed the necessity to strengthen the humanitarian response in the Gaza Strip, especially with the onset of winter and the worsening famine and disease caused by the Israeli 13-month-old war on the strip.

Abdelatty made his remarks during a meeting in Cairo on Tuesday with Sigrid Kaag, the UN's Chief Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza.

The meeting tackled ways to address the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and ensure the effective delivery of aid, according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.

Abdelatty underscored that the daily aid entering Gaza is inadequate to cope with the scale of the ongoing humanitarian disaster in the strip.

He also slammed Israel’s continued military control over the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing and its failure to fully open other crossings with Gaza as a deliberate attempt to hinder aid access, in a clear violation of international humanitarian law.

Abdelatty expressed Egypt's commitment to continuing consultations with the UN official on implementing her mandate under UN Security Council Resolution 2720.

Additionally, the Egyptian minister called international community to pressure Israel to fulfill its responsibilities toward the Palestinians civilians in the strip, in accordance with its obligations as an occupying power.

Abdelatty also condemned Israel's recent decision to withdraw from the agreement regulating UNRWA’s operations, describing it as a dangerous escalation intended to liquidate the Palestinian and undermine the refugees’ issue.

Catastrophic situation

The Israeli blockade on Gaza, which has severely restricted the entry of food, water, and medicine since October 2023, has left the 2.3 million residents on the brink of starvation.

The situation has worsened in northern Gaza, where a total blockade on aid since late September has exacerbated the crisis.

On Tuesday, international aid organizations criticized Israel for failing to meet US demands to allow greater humanitarian access, noting that the conditions in Gaza are worse than at any point in the 13-month conflict.

While Israel reported an average of 57 trucks per day entering Gaza in October and 81 per day in early November, the UN puts the number much lower, at 37 trucks daily since October.

International aid organizations estimates that at least 350 trucks of aid per day are needed to meet the minimum survival needs of 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza.

Empowering Palestinian Authority

Meanwhile, Egypt's top diplomat reviewed during the meeting with the UN official Cairo's recent efforts to promote internal Palestinian reconciliation.

He reaffirmed Egypt's strong commitment to empowering the Palestinian National Authority to take responsibility in Gaza.

Earlier in November, Cairo hosted a meeting with high-level representatives from the Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah.

The meeting focused on forming a technocratic relief-focused committee to oversee humanitarian and relief operations in the post-war Gaza Strip through a presidential decree by President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas.

Abdelatty also reiterated to Kaag Egypt's rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians from their land, the need to unify the West Bank and Gaza under the leadership of the Palestinian Authority.

He also asserted the importance of implementing the two-state solution, the statement noted.
