Egypt supports stability in Horn of Africa: FM Abdelatty to EU special representative

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty stressed on Saturday to the European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, that Cairo advocates for stability in the region.

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, FM Abdelatty's meeting with Weber took place during his participation in the Sir Bani Yas Forum in the UAE.

FM Abdelatty reaffirmed to Weber Cairo's commitment to ensure respect for Somalia's sovereignty and territorial integrity and support for legitimate state institutions.

He urged international efforts to aid Somalia in enhancing security and combating terrorism.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the Sudanese crisis, agreeing on the urgent need for a ceasefire as a step toward a comprehensive political solution and ensuring humanitarian aid reaches those in need.

European counterparts

According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, Abdelatty held several meetings to discuss boosting bilateral relations with a number of his counterparts, including Serbian FM Marko Đurić, Latvian FM Baiba Braže, Pakistani FM Ishaq Dar, and Bahraini FM Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.

Additionally, Abdelatty met with Michael Roth, Chair of Germany's Bundestag Foreign Affairs Committee, to discuss boosting relations between the two countries.

FM Abdelatty highlighted to Roth Cairo's intensive efforts with regional and international partners to reach an immediate ceasefire and prisoner swap in the Gaza war.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of bolstering international humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza, who are enduring severe hardships due to violations of international law and international humanitarian law by Israeli forces. 

For his part, the German official commended Egypt’s mediation efforts in the region.

On Friday, FM Abdelatty met with Russian FM Sergey Lavrov, Emirati FM Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Cypriot FM Constantinos Kombos to discuss issues of common concern.
