'Military operations in Syria must stop to launch comprehensive political process': Arab, Astana track FMs in Doha

The foreign ministers of five Arab countries (Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Iraq and Saudi Arabia) and their counterparts from the Astana track (Russia, Turkey and Iran) said on Saturday: “We must seek to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis that leads to the cessation of military operations and the protection of civilians." .

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty participated in the ministerial meeting upon the directive of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

“The continuation of the Syrian crisis constitutes a dangerous development for the safety of the country and regional and international security," the eight top diplomats stated after a meeting in Doha to discuss the unfolding between insurgents and the Syrian army in Syria.

“International efforts must be strengthened to increase humanitarian aid to the Syrian people and ensure sustainable and unhindered access."

“Military operations in Syria must be stopped to launch a comprehensive political process based on Security Council Resolution 2254," the statement said. 

The meeting between the eight foreign ministers hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran, Moscow, and Ankara agreed on the initiation of "political dialogue between the Syrian government and the legitimate opposition groups."

Arghachi's remarks came after the discussions in Doha with his Russian and Turkish counterparts, Sergei Lavrov and Hakan Fidan.
