Šuica made her remarks during a phone call with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty on Monday.
According to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry, the two sides discussed ways to bolster relations, particularly in the Mediterranean region.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of strengthening regional cooperation between Egypt and the European Union (EU) in the Mediterranean based on principles of sovereignty, peace, security, and international law. The statement added that he also emphasised the importance of collaboration between the two sides in overcoming common challenges.
"Intensifying cooperation achieves mutual benefit for the Mediterranean nations," Abdelatty told Commissioner Šuica in the call.
EU's €7.4 billion package
Similarly, according to the statement, Abdelatty expressed keenness to build upon the positive momentum in Egypt-EU relations, especially following the agreement to launch a comprehensive strategic partnership in March 2024.
Under the deal signed between President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Egypt would receive €7.4 billion in EU funding until 2027.
Abdelatty emphasised the importance of deepening political and economic cooperation with the EU, particularly by enhancing trade and investment ties, the statement noted.
He highlighted the need to expedite the implementation of the EU's €7.4 billion financing package for Egypt, including the disbursement of the initial €1 billion tranche and securing the European Parliament's approval for the subsequent €4 billion tranche.
In conclusion, according to the statement, Abdelatty called for activating the outcomes of the Egyptian-European Investment Conference held in June in Cairo, which witnessed the signing of 29 agreements worth nearly €49 billion.
