Egypt calls for urgent Gaza ceasefire, captives exchange: El-Sisi to Cypriot president

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi reaffirmed in a phone call with his Cypriot counterpart, Nikos Christodoulides, the urgency of reaching a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, exchanging captives, and ensuring unrestricted access to humanitarian aid by the people in the strip.

The call comes as Egypt and Qatar continue their intensive mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire agreement to end Israel’s more than yearlong war on Gaza.

According to a statement by the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi and Christodoulides also discussed other regional developments, including the situation in Syria.

In this regard, the Egyptian president stressed the importance of preserving Syria's unity and territorial integrity, urging the launching of an inclusive political process that involves all spectrums of the Syrian people.

For his part, Christodoulides expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s continuous efforts to achieve stability and prevent further escalation in the Middle East.

Egyptian-Cypriot Ties

Moreover, the two leaders reaffirmed the strategic importance of their bilateral relations and emphasized the need to enhance cooperation, particularly in economics, investment, trade, and energy.

They also highlighted the significance of holding regular trilateral meetings between Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece to further bolster regional collaboration.

Over the past decade, Egypt, Cyprus, and Greece have strengthened their tripartite cooperation across various sectors, holding high-level meetings and multiple summits to promote and advance joint projects and initiatives.
