Earlier Wednesday, a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of New Orleans revellers, killing 10 people and injuring more than 30 others in what the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism, AP reported.
In a statement, the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed Cairo's full solidarity with the US, extending its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
Egypt further reiterated its complete rejection of all forms of violence that threaten the security and safety of civilians.
According to AP, the driver was killed in a firefight with police following the attack.
Investigators combed the area for potential explosive devices, and the injured were taken to five hospitals, the city’s emergency preparedness department said.
The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed, and the Justice Department said Attorney General Merrick Garland was also briefed.
The attack is the latest example of a vehicle being used as a weapon to carry out mass violence, a trend that has alarmed law enforcement officials in the US and Europe.
