In a statement released by the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, Egypt affirmed its solidarity with Chad's government and people at this critical time and expressed its condemnation of this terrorist act.
Egypt also voiced its support for the Chadian government's efforts to maintain the country's security and stability and bring about the Chadian people's aspirations for development and peace.
The attack on the presidential office conducted by a group of gunmen left 19 dead; 18 attackers and one security personnel member, the Chadian government said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
Citing unnamed security sources, the AFP news agency said the attackers were members of the Boko Haram armed group and Reuters news agency that the incident was likely an “attempted terrorist attack”.
However, Chad’s foreign minister and government spokesman Abderaman Koulamallah said they were “probably not” rebels, describing them instead as drunken “Pieds Nickeles” – a reference to a French comic featuring hapless crooks.
