Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called on the US to engage in efforts aimed at reaching a final resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict per international law to achieve a lasting peace in the region.

Such a solution will bring much-needed security and stability to the region’s people and end the decades-long conflict, Abdelatty said, in full cooperation with US President Donald Trump’s administration.

Abdelatty made his remarks during a phone call on Monday with US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steven Witkoff.

According to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry, Egypt’s top diplomat emphasised the critical role of the US in ensuring the upholding of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Palestine during the call.

The two sides also discussed the latest developments in implementing the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which took effect on 19 January following months of a tripartite mediation by Egypt, Qatar and the US.

The statement added that Abelatty and Witkoff also tackled ways to proceed with its full implementation in three stages.

Additionally, Abdelatty stressed the need to allow the maximum amount of humanitarian aid to enter the Gaza Strip rapidly to meet the needs of its residents, given the severe deterioration of the humanitarian situation there.

The call was part of ongoing consultation between Egypt and the new US administration and aimed to build on the recent conversation between the Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Trump, the statement noted.

The call was the first between the two leaders following Trump's suggestion to relocate Palestinians to Jordan and Egypt—a suggestion that both President El-Sisi and King Abdullah II of Jordan have rejected.
