EU support crucial to establishing Palestinian state: El-Sisi to Mediterranean commissioner

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi stressed the European Union's crucial role in restoring calm, achieving lasting stability, and advancing the establishment of a Palestinian state, which is the only viable path to enduring peace in the region.

This came during President El-Sisi's meeting with Dubravka Šuica, the European commissioner for the Mediterranean, in Cairo on Sunday, a statement by the Egyptian presidency read.

The statement added that President El-Sisi shared his perspective on developments in the Gaza Strip with the European commissioner.

El-Sisi also reviewed Egypt’s efforts to implement the ceasefire agreement, facilitate the captive-detainee exchange, deliver humanitarian aid, and accelerate the reconstruction process without displacing Palestinians.

Moreover, the meeting touched on the situations in LibyaSudan, and Syria. Both sides stressed the need for joint efforts to achieve stability in these countries and ensure the safety of their citizens.

For his part, the EU official praised Egypt's crucial role in maintaining regional security and stability and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting these efforts.

They also discussed the migration issue, with both sides stressing the need for a comprehensive approach that links migration to development, fosters cooperation on regular migration, and addresses the root causes of irregular migration.

The EU pledged 200 million euros in grants to Egypt for migration management as part of a 7.4 billion euro aid and investment package announced after elevating Egypt-EU relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership in March 2024.

President El-Sisi also underscored the importance of building on this momentum and advancing cooperation under this strategic partnership framework.

Additionally, President El-Sisi noted that establishing the post of EU commissioner for the Mediterranean in the new European Commission structure is a positive step that will enhance cooperation between the EU and Mediterranean countries. 

Meanwhile, Šuica underscored the significance of enhancing trade and investment cooperation between Egypt and the EU.
