Egypt ‘deeply concerned’ over Israeli escalation in Lebanon: FM to Lebanese PM
Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, expressed deep concern over the Israeli escalating violence in Lebanon and strongly condemned the bombing of a building in Beirut, during a phone call with the Lebanese prime minister, Nawaf Salam, on Friday.
According to Egypt’s foreign ministry, the two discussed the latest developments, following Israeli airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s diplomatic efforts with regional and international partners to help de-escalate the situation, which Salam welcomed.
He warned of the grave consequences of the current Israeli escalation, saying it risked pushing the region into a wider confrontation.
Reaffirming Egypt’s support for Lebanon, Abdelatty rejected any actions that could threaten the security and stability of its people. He urged the international community to take responsibility for halting Israel’s repeated violations of Lebanese sovereignty.
He also called for full adherence to the cessation of hostilities agreement in southern Lebanon and for the immediate and complete withdrawal of Israeli forces.
Abdelatty stressed the importance of empowering the Lebanese army to enforce UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 Israeli war on Lebanon and calls for a full Israeli withdrawal from the south, the disarmament of armed groups, and the deployment of the Lebanese army alongside UN peacekeepers.
