Deputy foreign minister Nabil Habashi contacted the Egyptian embassies in Bangkok and Yangon to check on citizens in the affected areas, according to a statement from the foreign ministry.
“The embassies are monitoring the situation around the clock until the state of emergency ends,” the statement said.
Egypt also offered condolences to Myanmar and Thailand over the victims of the quake, expressing solidarity with both countries and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar caused widespread devastation, leaving more than 1,000 dead and thousands injured. Buildings collapsed, and infrastructure suffered severe damage, including at a construction site in neighbouring Thailand.
Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city and the closest major urban centre to the epicentre, suffered the worst damage and continues to be affected by aftershocks.
