In a statement on Wednesday, the Egyptian foreign ministry expressed hope that the agreement would ensure the safety and freedom of navigation in the Red Sea.

The foreign ministry also emphasized that the ceasefire agreement could contribute constructively to ending the Israeli war on Gaza and to broader efforts to restore stability in the region.

On Tuesday, the US and the Houthis reached a ceasefire agreement after weeks of US airstrikes against various targets in northern Yemen.

For his part, President Donald Trump announced that the US would end its strikes against the Houthis after they agreed to stop attacking ships in the Red Sea.

Following the start of the Israeli war on Gaza in October 2023, Houthis have targeted Israeli-linked vessels in the Red Sea in what they described as an act of solidarity with the Palestinians.

The Yemeni group suspended these attacks in late January after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire deal but threatened to resume them after Israel unilaterally ended the truce in March.

The Houthi-US ceasefire came as Israel and the Yemeni group traded strikes and counterstrikes in recent days.

Earlier this week, a Houthi missile targeted Ben Gurion airport. On Tuesday, Israel responded by bombing Sanaa Airport.
