Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, 69, was elected Pope on Thursday, taking the papal name Leo XIV. He becomes the first US cleric to lead the Catholic Church and its 1.4 billion followers.
The newly elected pope succeeded Pope Francis, who died on 21 April.
