Egypt FM, US senior adviser discuss regional crises, African issues

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty and Senior Adviser to the US President on Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs Massad Boulos discussed several regional crises and African issues on Sunday, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During a meeting in Cairo, both sides reviewed the latest rapid developments in Libya.

In this respect, Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's firm position toward the Libyan crisis, stressing the importance of preserving Libya's unity, stability, and territorial integrity.

He also highlighted the necessity of maintaining the Libyan people's exclusive right to lead the political process, supporting and strengthening the role of legitimate Libyan institutions, and working toward unifying executive, economic, and security institutions. 

Moreover, he underscored the urgency of disbanding militias and ensuring the complete withdrawal of all foreign forces, fighters, and mercenaries from Libya, rejecting any illegitimate military presence by foreign actors in the country.

The meeting also addressed developments in Lebanon, where Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to supporting Lebanon, its government, and national institutions to achieve security and stability. 

Furthermore, FM Abdelatty expressed Cairo's categorical rejection of any violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He also emphasized the need to implement the hostilities cessation agreement and ensure the immediate and complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon. 

He further asserted the importance of all parties implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 comprehensively and without selectivity.

Regarding developments in Syria, Abdelatty affirmed Egypt's commitment to supporting the Syrian people and respecting Syria's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. 

He said Syria should become a source of stability in the region, affirming the need to launch a comprehensive political process that includes all factions of the Syrian society to overcome the current critical crises.

African issues
 

Both sides also discussed ways to enhance trilateral cooperation in Africa, support peace, security, and development, and resolve conflicts peacefully, per US President Donald Trump’s directives.

Additionally, they reviewed the challenges to peace and security on the African continent, particularly developments in the Horn of Africa, Sudan, and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Egypt's top diplomat outlined Cairo’s efforts to support security and stability in these countries, promote the nation-state concept, empower national institutions, and preserve their unity and territorial integrity.

He also reviewed Egypt's efforts to help accelerate post-conflict reconstruction, stressing the importance of mobilizing international support to alleviate humanitarian suffering in conflict-affected areas.

In this regard, Abdelatty highlighted Cairo's efforts to support Africa, strengthen economic cooperation, and open new prospects for trade and partnership within the African continent. 

He also spotlighted the role of the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD) and the Egyptian Export and Investment Guarantee Agency (EEIGA) in Africa, which work with a capital of up to $600 million. 

Abdelatty also noted that the Egyptian government has allocated $100 million to implement development projects in the Southern Nile Basin countries.

The meeting also addressed ways to enhance economic, trade, and investment relations between Egypt and the US.

Both sides discussed Cairo's ongoing arrangements for hosting the Egypt-US Economic Forum, which will involve major US companies and be coordinated with the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington.

Meanwhile, Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's serious steps toward economic reform and attracting investments, highlighting the economic opportunities Egypt offers to US companies for investment in ways that serve mutual interests. 

He underscored the promising investment opportunities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and encouraged US companies to seize them, particularly in logistics, energy, and manufacturing. 

Abdelatty also expressed Egypt’s pride in its strategic partnership with the US, which has continued over four decades and achieved common political, economic, and military interests. 

In addition, he articulated Egypt’s aspiration to continue working with the US administration under President Trump to strengthen bilateral ties in various fields.

In response, the US official expressed his appreciation for Egypt's close ties with the US, underscoring Cairo's pivotal role in promoting security and stability in its regional surroundings, whether in Africa or the Middle East. 

Boulos also expressed his aspiration to work closely with Egypt to strengthen the strategic partnership between both nations.

Earlier, the US official held separate meetings with President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and the Head of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, Hassan Rashad, during which they discussed the latest regional developments.
