Egypt committed to supporting nuclear-weapon-free world: El-Sisi to IAEA chief

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi reiterated on Monday Egypt’s longstanding commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, emphasizing the country’s leading role in supporting a world free of nuclear weapons.

President El-Sisi said this during a meeting in Cairo with Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

During the meeting, El-Sisi also reiterated the need to establish a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East.

He added that Egypt looks forward to strengthening the IAEA’s efforts to achieve the universality of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and rendering the Middle East a nuclear-weapon-free zone.

Moreover, El-Sisi praised the IAEA’s role in advancing global peace and security through nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, while maximizing the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

The president also welcomed ongoing efforts to expand cooperation between Egypt and the agency.

Meanwhile, Grossi hailed Egypt’s active and historic role and ongoing efforts in promoting disarmament.

The talks also touched on regional developments, with El-Sisi highlighting Egypt’s efforts to restore regional stability.

He stressed the need for a comprehensive approach to address all aspects of regional security to ensure lasting peace in the Middle East.
