In a call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Abdelatty urged steps to maintain the ceasefire and avoid renewed hostilities, calling for de-escalation to support regional security.
He also pressed for a return to talks on Iran’s nuclear file, describing diplomacy as the most effective way to rebuild trust and lower tensions.
The call came days after US President Donald Trump announced the ceasefire, declaring an end to what he called “the 12-day war” between Iran and Israel. Iran, however, has since expressed scepticism that Israel would honour the deal.
Talks with IAEA chief
Abdelatty also spoke with Rafael Mariano Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Monday as part of Cairo’s push to revive nuclear diplomacy.
According to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, Abdelatty voiced support for the IAEA’s role under the Non-Proliferation Treaty and stressed the need to preserve its credibility amid rising tensions.
Grossi, for his part, praised Egypt’s role in supporting dialogue and regional stability. He also welcomed Egypt’s support for a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue and a Middle East free of nuclear weapons.
Iran began enriching uranium to 60 percent in 2021, far above the 3.67 percent limit set by the 2015 nuclear deal. Though still below weapons grade, the move brought Tehran closer to the 90 percent threshold needed for a bomb. The US exited the deal in 2018.
US envoy discusses Gaza and Iran
In a separate call, Abdelatty spoke with Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, focusing on both Gaza and Iran.
On Iran, Abdelatty repeated calls for both Tehran and Tel Aviv to uphold the ceasefire and return to nuclear negotiations.
On Gaza, he called for the immediate restoration of the truce, the release of hostages and detainees, and unimpeded humanitarian access amid a worsening crisis.
More than 500 Palestinians were reportedly killed in May as crowds attempted to access aid from the Israeli-American Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Hundreds more were injured, and food shortages remain severe.
Abdelatty also said Egypt hopes to host an international reconstruction conference once a ceasefire is in place, in coordination with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the United Nations (UN).
Support for Palestinian statehood
On Sunday, Abdelatty held a separate call with Varsen Aghabekian, the Palestinian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He reiterated Egypt’s position: that only a political resolution leading to Palestinian statehood can prevent future cycles of violence.
Since Israel launched its war on Gaza in October 2023, more than 56,000 Palestinians—primarily women and children—have been killed, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
