Egypt launches 15th aid convoy to counter famine in Gaza

Egypt launched its 15th humanitarian aid convoy on Thursday via the Rafah border crossing, preparing to enter Gaza through the Karm Abu Salem crossing to counter the famine caused by Israel’s genocidal war.

The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) organized the convoy as part of the Zad Al-Ezza: From Egypt to Gaza humanitarian initiative, launched on 27 July.

It includes several hundred tons of essential supplies, including food baskets, flour, infant formula, and hygiene products.

Since 27 July, Egypt has sent 14 aid convoys to Gaza to stem the unfolding famine caused by the five-month complete Israeli blockade on the strip.

On Wednesday, Egypt dispatched its 14th aid convoy to the Gaza Strip, carrying hundreds of tons of food, relief, and medical supplies along with fuel.

On Tuesday, the 13th Egyptian aid convoy delivered thousands of tons of food, medical equipment, hospital beds, and fuel to the strip.

Earlier in the week, the 12th and 11th aid convoys brought over 5,000 tons of aid — including food, medicine, diesel tankers, and tens of thousands of loaves of bread freshly prepared by the ERC.

On 6 August, ERC Executive Director Amal Imam said that Egypt has sent 36,000 trucks with more than 500,000 tons of aid since the war began. These involved 70 percent humanitarian supplies and 30 percent relief and medical goods.

The Egyptian Armed Forces have also conducted multiple aid airdrops to reach areas of Gaza cut off from distribution.

On Monday, members of The Elders, a peace advocacy group, visited ERC warehouses in Arish, North Sinai, where they saw large quantities of food and medicine awaiting clearance.

“Israeli killing and starving of Gaza must end now,” the group said after hearing accounts from truck drivers on how their trucks had been turned back multiple times without explanation.

Egypt has continued efforts, in collaboration with the UN and its humanitarian partners, to send aid to Gaza as part of its commitment to supporting the Palestinian people amid the worsening humanitarian conditions driven by Israel's systemic policy of starvation and blockade.

However, the Israeli authorities have delayed the entry of aid trucks to Gaza through endless inspections, leaving large numbers of aid trucks stranded on the Egyptian side of Rafah, according to Egyptian officials.

Since October 2023, Israel has killed at least 61,599 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children, and wounded over 153,575 others, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Israeli blockade on the strip has starved at least 200 Palestinians, including tens of children, to death.

The United Nations said over 5,000 children across Gaza were diagnosed with malnutrition in May — though this is likely an undercount.
