The Muslim Council of Elders, chaired by Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ahmed El-Tayyeb, has denounced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s colonial rhetoric in the media of the so-called “Greater Israel” vision.

In a statement on Thursday, the council affirmed its categorical rejection of Netanyahu’s comments, stating they represent a clear violation of the UN Charter and international law and contradict respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

The council added that Netanyahu’s statements also undermine peace efforts and jeopardize regional and global security.

The council urged the international community to act immediately to halt the Israeli occupation's violations, end aggression against Palestinians, and reject policies of forced displacement and starvation.

It also reiterated its call for the international community to recognize the right of Palestinians to an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

In a recent interview with Israeli news channel i24NEWS, Netanyahu said he is “very much attached to” what he called “the vision of Greater Israel,” describing himself as being on a “historic and spiritual mission.”

His remarks sparked Arab and global condemnation. Arab nations, including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Qatar, and the Arab League, described, in separate statements, Netanyahu’s remarks as expansionist, a violation of international sovereignty, and a threat to regional stability.

In a statement on Wednesday, Egypt asked for official clarifications from Israel about Netanyahu’s comments, warning that such rhetoric fuels instability and violates the sovereignty of Arab states.
