It denounced Israel's deliberate targeting of journalists and humanitarian workers, and reiterated its rejection of the ongoing genocide being committed against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
Cairo called on the United Nations (UN) Security Council and the wider international community to “fulfil their responsibilities” by taking effective measures to stop Israel’s war on Gaza.
The condemnation comes as Egypt continues to position itself as a key mediator in the war, working alongside Qatar and the US to broker a ceasefire agreement and to secure the release of captives and prisoners, while also coordinating the flow of humanitarian aid through Rafah and Arish.
The Israeli attack began with a suicide drone strike on one of the medical complex’s buildings, followed by an air raid as the wounded were being evacuated, according to Gaza officials. The strikes left 20 dead and dozens more injured.
Among those killed were five journalists, including contributors to Reuters, the Associated Press and Al Jazeera.
The assault drew widespread condemnation internationally, with governments and press freedom groups stressing that neither hospitals nor journalists should ever be targeted in war.
Officials in Gaza put the number of journalists killed by Israel since the outbreak of the war in October 2023 at 244.
The attack came days after the UN formally declared a famine in Gaza.
Israel’s war has killed nearly 63,000 Palestinians and injured more than 160,000 others, according to Gaza’s health ministry, most of them women and children.
