Both sides underlined the unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, which they warned has reached the level of famine, according to a statement by the Egyptian foreign ministry.

Minister Abdelatty stressed that Israeli violations have crossed all limits. He urged the European Union to take concrete, effective measures to compel Israel to comply with international law and humanitarian norms.

Albares noted that his call came in the context of listening to Egypt’s perspective ahead of the informal EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Denmark later this month.

During the talks, Abdelatty also outlined the ceasefire proposal currently on the table, based on the plan put forward by U.S. Special Envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

He explained that the only viable proposal entails a 60-day ceasefire, during which negotiations would be held to reach a comprehensive settlement, end the war, secure the release of hostages and detainees, and allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza.

“The ball is now in Israel’s court,” he stressed.

Beyond Gaza, the two ministers reviewed bilateral ties, praising the strong and rapidly expanding relationship between Egypt and Spain.

They highlighted the upcoming visit of King Felipe VI of Spain to Cairo as a reflection of the depth of relations, building on President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s official visit to Spain in February 2025, which elevated ties to a strategic partnership.
