Egypt exerts intensive efforts to support Lebanon stability: Ambassador

Egyptian Ambassador to Beirut Alaa Moussa affirmed on Monday that Cairo is exerting intensive efforts to bolster stability in Lebanon, stressing that the Lebanese state's exclusive control over weapons is a non-negotiable "firm principle."

Moussa delivered these remarks during a press conference held on Monday following his meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun at Baabda Presidential Palace in Lebanon.

During the press conference, he clarified that confining weapons to the state is an internal matter for Lebanon.

He also affirmed that Egypt continues intensive coordination with all concerned parties and supports all initiatives aimed at preserving Lebanon’s unity and stability.

Moreover, the ambassador stressed the urgency of Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon.

Moussa also emphasized the need to support Lebanon in terms of political, economic, and security assistance.

On Sunday, Israeli airstrikes hit southern Lebanon as Tel Aviv escalated its aggression against Beirut in violation of the November 2024 ceasefire.

Lebanon’s National News Agency described the strikes as a “ring of fire,” while the Israeli army claimed it had targeted military infrastructure, including a Hezbollah site on the Beaufort Ridge. However, these assertions could not be independently verified.

The ceasefire — brokered by the US and France — obliges Israel to halt attacks and withdraw from Lebanon, while requiring Hezbollah to disarm in the south to allow the Lebanese army to deploy.

Nevertheless, Israel continues to occupy five areas it calls “strategic,” prompting Hezbollah to reject disarmament talks on the grounds that such a move would only benefit Tel Aviv.

Last Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proposed a “phased” withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon if Beirut proceeded with plans to seize Hezbollah’s weapons.

Since the 2024 war, the Lebanese army has been deploying in the south to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure, with the cabinet recently tasking it to draft a disarmament plan by the year’s end.

On another note, Moussa stated that he delivered an official invitation to President Aoun for the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), scheduled for 1 November.
