Egypt slams Israel over Gaza war crimes, starvation, displacement

Ahram Online , Sunday 7 Sep 2025

Egypt’s foreign minister, Badr Abdelatty, on Sunday condemned Israel’s war on Gaza, denouncing Tel Aviv's acts of genocide, forced displacement, and the use of starvation as a weapon against Palestinians during Cairo talks with Lieutenant General Jibril Rajoub, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Palestinian Fatah movement.

In a statement, Egypt’s foreign ministry said the talks focused on the escalating situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, with Abdelatty reviewing Cairo’s diplomatic efforts to halt the Israeli war on Gaza and expand humanitarian aid access to the besieged enclave.

He urged Israel to accept the 60-day ceasefire proposal mediated by Egypt and Qatar, based on a framework drawn up by US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, which Hamas accepted on 18 August.

Acceptance of the plan, he said, would clear the way for reconstruction, beginning with an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction to be hosted by Egypt in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the United Nations (UN).

Turning to the West Bank, Abdelatty condemned Israel’s settlement expansion in the E1 area, as well as land seizures and settler intimidation campaigns.

He also stressed the need to mobilize international support for recognizing a Palestinian state, pointing to a forthcoming conference on the two-state solution, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly later this month.

Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s long-standing support for Palestinian self-determination and the creation of an independent state along the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

His talks coincided with a parallel meeting of Palestinian factions, including Hamas, in Cairo.

The Palestinian resistance group said its envoys had met with various factions, civil society groups, public figures, and business leaders to coordinate their positions.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation, expanding joint initiatives and developing a unified national strategy.

Participants pledged to intensify efforts to end the war, ensure sustained support for Gaza’s besieged population, and overcome political divisions that have long stymied reconciliation.
