Egypt sends 40th aid convoy to Gaza in face of tightened Israeli blockade

Egypt dispatched its 40th “Zad Al-Izza” aid convoy to Gaza on Thursday, carrying food and medicine, despite a fuel ban and Israel's blocking of 30 aid trucks on Wednesday.

The trucks, coordinated by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), lined up at the Rafah crossing before moving into the Karm Abu Salem crossing.

The 40th convoy carried over 80,000 food parcels, tons of flour, and medical and relief supplies.

The dispatch comes after Israeli occupation forces denied the entry of 30 trucks full of aid on Wednesday without providing an explanation, according to Al-Qahera News.

Egypt has recently intensified its efforts to send aid to Gaza's starving population, becoming the territory’s main lifeline amid the Israeli-made famine.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty said Egypt has provided over 70 percent of all aid that entered Gaza since the start of the war on 7 October 2023.

Moreover, Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy said Egypt has delivered more than 570,000 tons of aid to Gaza over the past 700 consecutive days.

All aid shipments are channelled through the ERC, supported by more than 35,000 volunteers, she added.

Egypt's relentless efforts continue as UN agencies and Oxfam warn that hundreds of thousands of civilians in northern Gaza are already in famine after Israel closed the Zikim crossing on 12 September, the only route for aid into the north.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said fuel and food stocks could run out within days.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have launched a new assault on Gaza City, prompting calls for civilians to evacuate south.

However, many residents refuse, citing the dangers along evacuation routes, the absence of lifesaving supplies in southern Gaza, and fears of permanent displacement.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council is expected to vote on a resolution demanding a ceasefire and expanded humanitarian access to Gaza.

The measure, backed by most of the council members, follows repeated US vetoes and comes after the UN formally declared famine in Gaza, nearly two years into Israel’s war on the territory.
