Egypt PM meets Cyprus, Greece leaders in New York to boost strategic cooperation

Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly highlighted the importance of Egypt’s ties with Cyprus and Greece during separate meetings with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Tuesday.

According to the Egyptian cabinet, the meetings took place on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

Meeting with the Cypriot president
 

During their meeting, Madbouly stressed that Cairo attaches great importance to its cooperation with Cyprus, particularly in natural gas exploration, where Egypt also works with the Italian company Eni.

He expressed hope for further energy cooperation, describing it as strategic and mutually beneficial.

The Egyptian prime minister highlighted President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s focus on strengthening strategic relations with Cyprus and expanding cooperation in all fields, particularly in the economic sector. 

He also thanked Cyprus for its support of Egypt’s positions within the European Union and expressed hope that this support would continue.

Madbouly invited Christodoulides to attend the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in November.

 

 

For his part, the Cypriot president said he looks forward to meeting President El-Sisi soon to discuss issues of mutual interest. 

He also expressed hope to finalize the Strategic Partnership Declaration with Egypt and turn the strong political ties into greater investment and trade cooperation. 

Christodoulides also voiced his eagerness for the upcoming summit between Egypt and the EU, noting that Cyprus’ assumption of the EU Council presidency in early 2026 will provide an ideal opportunity to strengthen ties with Egypt.

 

 

Meeting with the Greek PM
 

In his talks with Mitsotakis, Madbouly underlined Cairo’s interest in expanding cooperation with Athens in energy and natural gas, as well as in new fields such as technology, innovation, entrepreneurship, and artificial intelligence.

He described the Egypt-Greece electricity interconnection project (GREGY) as a major step forward in bilateral relations and a contribution to European energy security and the transition to a green economy.

Madbouly also highlighted Egypt’s efforts to address irregular migration and called for closer coordination with Greece to address the issue comprehensively, considering its humanitarian, economic, and security dimensions.

He expressed hope for the faster implementation of the agreement to recruit seasonal Egyptian agricultural workers in Greece, removing any obstacles, and exploring expansion into other sectors, such as construction and tourism.

Madbouly emphasized the importance of utilising every available opportunity to enhance trade and commended Greece’s support for strengthening relations between Egypt and the EU, particularly in advancing the Egypt-EU comprehensive strategic partnership.

He also invited Mitsotakis to attend the opening ceremony of GEM.

For his part, Mitsotakis praised the historic ties between Greece and Egypt, stressing the importance of enhancing economic cooperation, particularly in the agricultural sector.

He also stressed the importance of supporting the private sector's role between Egypt and Greece and welcomed ongoing efforts to recruit skilled Egyptian labour.

 

 

Trilateral​ foreign ministers meeting
 

On the same day, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with his Cypriot and Greek counterparts, Constantinos Kombos and Giorgos Gerapetritis, as part of the Egyptian-Cypriot-Greek trilateral cooperation mechanism, according to the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, especially the Palestinian cause and the situation in Libya.

They stressed the importance of joint efforts to restore security and stability in the region amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East.
