Badr Abdelatty participated in the high-level meeting on the comprehensive review of the UN peacebuilding architecture, as Egypt is serving as co-facilitator of the 2025 review process.

In his statement, Abdelatty emphasized that the global spread of conflicts necessitates addressing the root causes of crises through a more comprehensive approach—one that strikes a balance between respecting national priorities and addressing the economic and social needs of states, while strengthening preventive measures to ensure peace and stability.

The foreign minister outlined Egypt’s priorities for supporting UN peacebuilding efforts, including: adopting a broader concept of peace that tackles the drivers of conflict by respecting national institutions and implementing states’ own priorities; building on General Assembly Resolution 78/257 regarding the allocation of resources to the Peacebuilding Fund, while urging its swift implementation and the expansion of its financing sources; and reinforcing multilateral cooperation, particularly with the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the African Union.

Abdelatty also highlighted the leadership role of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi in advancing post-conflict reconstruction and development in Africa, undertaken within the framework of the African Union.

He pointed to Egypt’s hosting of the AU’s Center for Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development as a regional platform for coordinating related efforts and projects.

The foreign minister further emphasized the need for a more inclusive approach at every stage of peace processes, with greater participation of women, youth, and local communities.

He emphasised the importance of strengthening the linkages between peacebuilding and peacekeeping to ensure complementarity, as well as enhancing coordination between the Peacebuilding Commission and other UN bodies, including the Security Council and the Economic and Social Council, to overcome challenges to sustainable peace and uphold international peace and security.

The G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty took part on Thursday in the second meeting of G20 foreign ministers under South Africa’s presidency.

In his remarks, Abdelatty stressed that the current weaknesses of the multilateral system undermines the global economy’s ability to advance sustainable development goals, calling for a comprehensive approach to structural reform.

He highlighted the need to overhaul the international financial system, address the development financing gap, tackle the growing burden of sovereign debt on developing countries, and reform the multilateral trading system.

The minister also pointed to the G20 meeting on food security hosted by Cairo earlier this month in coordination with South Africa’s presidency, describing it as a milestone in Egypt’s active engagement within the group and as evidence of Cairo’s commitment to strengthening international cooperation for a better future for all.

Turning to regional issues, Abdelatty emphasized the importance of upholding multilateralism based on international law and peaceful coexistence.

He condemned Israel’s ongoing aggression in Gaza, as well as violations in the West Bank and Jerusalem, describing them as a flagrant breach of international law that undermines the credibility of the UN system.

He reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of any forced displacement of Palestinians under any pretext, stressing the urgent need for a ceasefire and unimpeded humanitarian access.

Abdelatty urged the international community to support the joint Arab-Islamic plan for early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, to safeguard the Palestinians’ right to remain on their land.
