This came in Badr Abdelatty’s speech on Thursday in a ministerial meeting in support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), held on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly.

In his remarks, Abdelatty said the growing wave of international recognition of the State of Palestine marked a historic moment but stressed it must be translated into concrete action by establishing an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He underlined that such recognition must be accompanied by sustained backing for UNRWA, which he described as indispensable for protecting the rights and dignity of Palestinian refugees, warning that any attempt to undermine its mandate would gravely harm the Palestinian cause.

The Egyptian top diplomat reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for UNRWA and condemned all efforts to curtail its role, urging the international community to ensure both the financial and political support necessary for the agency to carry out its mission.

He also cited findings of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry, which concluded that acts of genocide had been committed against Palestinian civilians, stressing that this requires decisive international action to halt violations aimed at displacing Palestinians and erasing their cause.

Abdelatty highlighted Egypt’s efforts to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza, noting that despite Israel’s occupation, closure of the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing, and obstruction of aid deliveries, Egypt continues working to facilitate the flow of humanitarian assistance.

He pointed to Cairo’s ongoing coordination with Qatar and the United States to secure a ceasefire, and to Egypt’s preparations to host an international conference to implement the Arab-Islamic plan for early recovery and reconstruction — a framework he said was crucial to ensuring that Palestinians remain on their land under a unified, legitimate authority governed by the rule of law.
