Egypt’s 43rd humanitarian aid convoy began crossing into the besieged Gaza Strip on Sunday, as part of the country’s ongoing efforts to maintain a vital lifeline to the territory under Israeli blockade.

The convoy is carrying nearly 3,000 tons of relief supplies, including more than 2,700 tons of food and flour and 300 tons of medical and emergency aid, according to a statement by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) on Sunday.

It is part of the Zad Al-Izza initiative, launched on 27 July, which has sent dozens of convoys to Gaza carrying thousands of tons of flour, food baskets, infant formula, medicines, personal care kits, and fuel.

However, aid trucks have repeatedly faced deliberate obstructions by Israeli forces while moving from the Rafah crossing to the Karm Abu Salem crossing.

Trucks are always subjected to lengthy Israeli inspections, with some turned back to the Rafah border without explanation, slowing the delivery of aid to the starving population.

As a result, large quantities of vital supplies remain stranded in warehouses across the Egyptian side of the Rafah crossing.

This comes as conditions in Gaza worsen dramatically. The UN relief and works agency UNRWA reported that one in three children went without food in the past 24 hours.

Citing an International Rescue Committee assessment, the agency said the catastrophe is a direct result of Israel’s blockade of much-needed food, medicine, and water.

In northern Gaza, the closure of the Zikim aid corridor earlier in September cut off half of the World Food Programme’s deliveries, shutting down community kitchens and health centres at the height of hunger.

In Gaza City, several hospitals have closed or evacuated under fire, while an airstrike destroyed a health facility in central Gaza despite having been cleared for safety under Israeli orders.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has officially declared famine in the Gaza Governorate, which includes Gaza City, warning that the crisis is spreading.

According to the UN, 90 percent of Gaza’s 2.1 million population have been displaced, with many sheltering in tents or overcrowded facilities without clean water or sanitation.

With electricity and fuel nearly gone, water treatment and sewage systems have collapsed, raising the risk of deadly disease outbreaks.

Meanwhile, Egypt's ERC has delivered over 570,000 tons of aid to Gaza in the past 700 days.

Since 7 October 2023, Egypt’s relief efforts have included 209 ambulances, 81,380 tons of fuel, four field hospitals within Gaza, and two hospitals in Arish to treat the wounded.

The ERC has also supported Palestinian families in Egypt, providing over 85,000 family reunification services, cash aid to more than 2,000 families, 137 relief interventions, and 244,000 medical services.

Its operations, backed by more than 35,000 volunteers, have also included 916 humanitarian flights and 599 aid shipments coordinated with 59 countries since the war began.

Since the beginning of Israel's genocidal war on Gaza, Egypt has provided about 70 percent of all aid entering the strip, underscoring its role as a key global hub for humanitarian support.
