A ceasefire deal, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the US, took effect on Friday after days of intense mediation in the Egyptian Red Sea resort.
Egypt is now preparing to host a summit aimed at mobilizing wider international support for US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan to end the war in Gaza.
The gathering, expected to be co-chaired by El-Sisi and Trump, is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday in Sharm El-Sheikh, though it may be moved up to Monday, according to Axios.
During his call with El-Sisi, President Christodoulides voiced Cyprus’s full support for the agreement’s implementation and praised Egypt’s vital role and El-Sisi’s personal efforts in securing its conclusion, according to a statement from the presidency.
El-Sisi invited Christodoulides to attend the Sharm El-Sheikh summit, which will mark the formal conclusion of the ceasefire agreement. He outlined the deal’s key provisions, emphasizing its importance in stopping the war, releasing captives and detainees, securing the entry of humanitarian aid, and initiating Gaza's reconstruction process.
He stressed that Egypt, in coordination with Qatar and the US, has made relentless efforts over the past two years to end the war and alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the Palestinian people.
Both presidents also underscored the urgency of beginning the reconstruction process without delay.
President El-Sisi further announced Egypt's intention to host an international conference on early recovery and reconstruction.
Egypt-Cyprus economic ties
The two leaders also reviewed bilateral relations, to deepen cooperation in political, trade, and investment fields. They discussed building on the outcomes of their January 2025 summit to expand joint projects in tourism, construction, agriculture, and other sectors of mutual interest.
The Cypriot President affirmed his country's continued support for Egypt's positions within the European Union.
