Egypt sends 59th aid convoy to Gaza amid ceasefire, reconstruction push

Egypt sent its 59th “Zad Al-Izza” convoy to Gaza on Monday, carrying more than 10,000 tons of aid, while also helping recover the remains of Israeli captives and working to reinforce a fragile ceasefire as part of a broader plan for reconstruction and governance.

The convoy, launched at dawn by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), included about 6,000 tons of food and flour, 2,700 tons of medical and relief supplies, and 1,500 tons of fuel.

This comes as Egypt expands its humanitarian and diplomatic roles in Gaza.

Over the weekend, Cairo deployed a team of engineers and heavy excavation equipment to assist Hamas-led efforts to recover the remains of Israeli captives killed during the war, as part of the Sharm El-Sheikh peace agreement signed on 13 October under a US-backed initiative led by President Donald Trump.

Hamas has recently widened its search for the Israeli remains across several areas of the strip, including Khan Younis and central Gaza.

However, it said the scale of destruction has made it difficult to locate bodies buried under rubble.

The group added that it had handed over all remains it could reach, but many are still trapped beneath collapsed tunnels and residential buildings.

The Egyptian team, equipped with bulldozers and excavators, is now assisting in the search, a rare example of humanitarian and technical cooperation on the ground.

Israeli officials, however, have urged faster progress, warning that further delays could threaten the ceasefire’s stability.

In tandem, the Israeli military confirmed carrying out a “targeted strike” in central Gaza late Saturday, highlighting how fragile the truce remains even as displaced families attempt to return to their destroyed homes.

Meanwhile, Cairo has hosted reconciliation meetings between Hamas and Fatah, which recently nominated Amjad Shawa, a veteran humanitarian coordinator, to lead a proposed technocratic committee to manage civil affairs in Gaza during the transitional period.

Egyptian intelligence and foreign ministry officials are also in contact with Israel to ensure full adherence to the ceasefire and maintain aid delivery through the Rafah and Karm Abu Salem crossings.

With the International Conference on Early Recovery and Reconstruction of Gaza set to take place in Cairo in November, Egypt’s continuous relief efforts and diplomacy have become central to stabilizing the situation in Gaza, supporting recovery, and preventing a renewed cycle of violence.

The ERC, Egypt’s main coordination body for Gaza aid, which has over 35,000 volunteers, has delivered over half a million tons of humanitarian assistance since October 2023.
