The talks were attended by Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed.
According to the Egyptian Presidency, President El-Sisi welcomed Afwerki, who is on a five-day official visit to Egypt, and praised his planned participation in the opening ceremony of the Grand Egyptian Museum on Saturday.
El-Sisi expressed Egypt’s appreciation for its longstanding strategic ties with Eritrea and its keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation, particularly in economic and investment fields, in support of Eritrea’s national development efforts. The president also recalled the outcomes of his historic visit to Asmara in October 2024.
The two leaders exchanged views on regional developments, with President Afwerki expressing deep appreciation for Egypt’s role under El-Sisi’s leadership in promoting stability and development across the Horn of Africa and East Africa.
He welcomed expanding economic cooperation with Egypt and enhancing coordination on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
The discussions also covered the situation in Sudan, where both presidents agreed on the need to support Sudan’s national institutions—chief among them the Sudanese Armed Forces—and reject any attempts to establish parallel entities.
El-Sisi highlighted Egypt’s efforts within the Quartet Mechanism to end the conflict and alleviate the humanitarian crisis, reaffirming Cairo’s commitment to preserving Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
The two leaders also discussed developments in Somalia, stressing adherence to the principles outlined in the joint statement issued following the Egypt-Eritrea-Somalia summit in Asmara in October 2024, which underscored respect for international law and the sovereignty and unity of all regional states.
They agreed on the importance of coordinating efforts to achieve regional stability and strengthen Somali state institutions.
The meeting also addressed the need to enhance cooperation to secure the Red Sea and protect freedom of navigation in this vital waterway.
President El-Sisi emphasized the importance of intensifying coordination between Egypt and Eritrea, as well as with Arab and African littoral states, to reinforce security and stability in the region.
