Egypt Consulate in Hamburg hosts celebration marking Grand Egyptian Museum inauguration

As part of Egypt’s nationwide celebrations marking the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), Consul General Dalia Abdel-Fattah hosted a special reception at the Institute of African and Asian Studies at the University of Hamburg.

The event was attended by senior officials from the Hamburg government and northern German states, representatives of the Islamic community and the Coptic Church, as well as prominent public figures and around 500 members of the Egyptian community in northern Germany.

Guests followed a live broadcast of the museum’s opening ceremony from Cairo, including President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s address and the accompanying artistic performances.

In her remarks, Consul General Abdel-Fattah described the museum as a milestone in humanity’s ongoing efforts to preserve cultural heritage, noting that it stands among the most significant cultural and civilisational projects in the modern world and reflects Egypt’s contemporary vision for safeguarding its legacy and sharing it globally in a manner worthy of its ancient civilisation.

She also highlighted the participation of the German President in the Cairo inauguration and the long-standing cooperation between Egypt and Germany in the fields of archaeology and heritage preservation.

The celebration featured remarks by Professor Andreas Schwab, Professor of Classical History at the University of Kiel, who spoke about the Grand Egyptian Museum’s unique position among the world’s museums.

During the event, the Consul General honoured the President of the Egyptian-German Association in Northern Germany, Dr Eng. Hany El-Naqrashi for five decades of dedication to promoting Egyptian cultural and civilisational heritage across the region.

The evening concluded with a performance by the Hannover Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Hans Christian Euler, featuring over 20 musicians.

The ensemble presented a selection of Egyptian and international compositions, culminating with Verdi’s Triumphal March from Aida, which added a refined touch to the celebration and reflected the richness, diversity, and global influence of Egyptian culture.
