Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) President Félix Tshisekedi discussed security developments in eastern Congo during a phone call on Tuesday, as regional and international efforts continue to stabilize the conflict-hit area.

According to the Egyptian presidency, El-Sisi welcomed recent peace agreements involving the Congolese government and the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement (M23), describing them as an important step toward easing tensions and restoring stability in the Great Lakes region. He voiced Egypt’s support for the Doha Comprehensive Peace Agreement, as well as a separate peace deal signed in Washington in December 2025.

El-Sisi said Egypt was prepared to support the implementation of the agreements and assist efforts to advance a political settlement, including by offering to host dialogue between the parties involved.

Tshisekedi thanked Egypt for its backing of peace efforts in the DRC and the wider region, the statement said. Both leaders agreed on the need to address obstacles that could hinder implementation of the agreements.

The call also touched on bilateral relations, with the two presidents expressing support for strengthening cooperation between Cairo and Kinshasa. El-Sisi noted Tshisekedi’s recent visit to Egypt for the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) and said he looked forward to further engagement.

Eastern DRC has seen renewed instability in recent years due to fighting between government forces and armed groups, including M23, despite multiple ceasefire and mediation initiatives led by regional and international actors.
