Egypt has sent a medical convoy and emergency health supplies to Sudan, as the country’s healthcare system continues to be strained by ongoing conflict, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said.

The convoy, which arrived in Sudan between 20 and 27 December, includes 13 doctors and about 1.5 tonnes of medicines and medical equipment. The team is operating in Red Sea State, where Sudan’s interim administrative centre is based, following the outbreak of war in April 2023.

The initiative was carried out under the patronage of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar.

Separately, Egypt’s health ministry dispatched 200 oxygen cylinders to Sudan’s Northern State, with Egypt’s consulate-general in Wadi Halfa coordinating their entry, according to the statement.

Sudanese health officials in Red Sea State and staff at Prince Osman Digna Referral Hospital received the convoy in Port Sudan, alongside members of Egypt’s diplomatic mission.

The Egyptian medical team met Red Sea State Governor Lieutenant General Mustafa Mohamed Nour, who said rehabilitating Sudan’s healthcare system was a government priority after extensive damage caused by the conflict.

Members of the convoy said they would provide medical services during their deployment, including in specialised and critical care fields.

Sudan’s health sector has been severely affected by fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), with hospitals damaged, supply chains disrupted, and large numbers of medical workers displaced.

The assistance comes as Cairo and Port Sudan continue diplomatic engagement, including a visit by the head of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council to Cairo earlier this month and ongoing coordination on political and economic issues. It also coincides with Sudan’s participation in the Russian-African ministerial conference hosted by Egypt.
