Egypt said on Monday it is tracking the situation of its nationals stranded in conflict zones after airspace closures across the Middle East disrupted travel amid escalating fighting between the United States and Iran.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that Minister Badr Abdelatty had spoken with Egyptian ambassadors across the region to get updates on citizens, including those stranded while travelling for tourism or medical treatment.

Embassies were instructed to maintain round-the-clock monitoring of nationals and strengthen direct communication through emergency hotlines, the ministry said. It added that consular teams would continue providing assistance until stranded citizens can be safely repatriated.

The ministry also said some Egyptians sustained minor injuries during the ongoing conflict but had received medical treatment and were later discharged. It did not specify where the injuries occurred.

The statement followed an announcement on Sunday by the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Defence that 58 people were wounded in Iranian retaliatory missile and drone attacks targeting US assets in the country. Emirati authorities said those injured included Egyptian nationals but gave no further details.

Iran’s strikes have targeted American military assets across the Gulf, including in Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain, according to regional authorities.

Airspace closures across parts of the Middle East have left travellers stranded as the confrontation between Washington, Tel Aviv, and Tehran enters its third day and spills into Lebanon, raising fears of a wider regional war.

About 11 million Egyptians live abroad, according to official estimates, with a large share residing in Gulf countries.
