During separate phone calls, the Egyptian FM discussed with his Omani and Iraqi and counterparts, Badr Al Busaidi and Fuad Hussein, the latest regional developments amidst the dangerous military escalation in the Middle East, which constitutes a direct threat to Arab national security.
According to the Egyptian foreign ministry, the calls also addressed ways to contain the current situation, where Abdelatty stressed the importance of de-escalation, urging all parties to exercise the utmost restraint.
He further emphasized the necessity to fully adhere to the principles of international law and the UN Charter, and prioritize dialogue and diplomatic channels, in order to spare the region the dangers of an expanding conflict.
Additionally, the ministers’ discussions touched on the attacks that targeted Oman, Iraq, and a number of Gulf and Arab countries, where the Egyptian FM affirmed Cairo’s full solidarity with Muscat, Baghdad, and all Arab states in confronting these attacks.
In this regard, Abdelatty raeffirmed Egypt’s categorical rejection of any infringement on the sovereignty and stability of Arab states, as well as of any justifications or pretexts used to legitimize such attacks.
The FMs calls come as the war in the Middle East, now in its second week, continues, with US President Donald Trump threatening to escalate the bombing of Iran, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has vowed that he would never surrender.
Diplomatic efforts by Oman to broker a deal between the Washington and Tehran over its nuclear progrm failed as the US and Israel opted to launch war on Iran in the midest of talks.
On Sunday, a day after the start of the war on Iran, an Oman port and an oil tanker off its coast were attacked by Iranian drones and missiles, according to news reports.
In Iraq, since the start of the war, Iraqi territories have been the recipient of various attacks, including attacks on pro-Iranian armed factions and strikes on Erbil and Sulimaniya in the Kurdish region of the country.
